At Highcliffe, we're proud to work with many Cornish designers and makers, and most recently we had the pleasure of collaborating with 'Atelier Safia' on a beautiful bespoke table for Anterre, a brand new luxury property at Highcliffe. We caught up with Safia, to hear more about her story, process and love of design.
You recently launched Atelier Safia - tell us about your new venture!
Atelier Safia has always been a dream of mine, kind of in the background. Once I got it off the ground, I realised all the skills I’ve picked up along the way were leading me here. The idea of creating something cherished from a simple chat really excites me. That’s what drives me - sharing my work with people who appreciate design details or the grain of wood in furniture just as much as I do.
How did you get into furniture design?
Looking back, it’s a mixture of things; being surrounded by nature from a young age, seeing how culture shapes our furniture needs and having some great teachers. I was hooked on the craft of shaping and joining wood. It’s been a journey of constant learning - one I hope will never end.
Where did you study?
I was fortunate enough to study at Falmouth University, which landed me both a career and a family here in Cornwall. Uni was more than just a degree; it was a chance for me to figure myself out. Cornwall's where I belong, watching the seasons shift the coastal landscape is just magic.
Tell us a bit about your process?
It’s all about the customer, from start to finish. First step: chatting about what they want and, just as importantly, don’t want. Then comes the messy part - research and sketching, scribbles everywhere. Once we’re on the same page, it’s time to get the wood and tools out, and the real fun begins. I love being in the thick of creating and those moments just before delivering a piece. It's like waiting to see the reaction of a friend opening a gift!
How would you describe your furniture?
My furniture is a blend of identities, shaped in wood, mixing function with nature. My style is simple. Let the wood shine, make sure it lasts. Think classic techniques with a modern twist.
Before Atelier Safia, you worked with Tom Raffield on furniture and lighting. What did you learn?
My time with Tom Raffield taught me a lot. I started as an Apprentice, then progressed to become the Furniture Team Leader, supporting all workshop departments as the Workshop Manager, and eventually creating lighting and furniture designs alongside Tom as the Design Coordinator. These roles provided ample opportunities to hone my skills and develop my passion for furniture.
What’s next for you?
I’m diving deeper into furniture design. I want projects that challenge me. I aim to take on projects that push me into less explored areas of furniture. Keep on growing, keep on creating.
Thank you!
